2004 Colorado Principal of the Year:
Western Slope Educator Earns Colorado High School Principal of the Year Honors
Brent A. Curtice has been named the 2004 MetLife/NASSP Colorado High School Principal of the Year. Brent Curtice is principal of Paonia High School in the Delta County School District. He was selected by the Colorado Association of Executives (CASE).
As principal, Mr. Curtice has focused on establishing a school “where students, staff, and parents feel safe, valued, and welcome.” The school’s emphasis on providing a challenging and demanding curriculum has resulted in above average test scores on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) and a top five ranking among 2A schools in Colorado on the ACT college entrance exams in 2003. Students taking core classes increased their ACT average composite scores from 21.7 to 25.0.
In support of Mr. Curtice’s nomination, Delta County Superintendent Laddie Livingston said, “[Brent’s] leadership has caused a genuine commitment by students, staff, parents, and the members of the community to a level of excellence rarely seen in public schools.” Livingston cited creative leadership and positive results as hallmarks of Curtice’s tenure.
An educator for 22 years, Brent Curtice is completing his ninth year as principal. Previously he was a teacher/coach at Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming. Mr. Curtice also was a teacher and athletic director at Hotchkiss High School. Brent Curtice earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Northern Colorado.
Brent Curtice was selected by his peers in the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP), a department of CASE and affiliate of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The principal of the year program is sponsored by MetLife and NASSP.
This award recognizes leaders who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students. Selection criteria include proven educational leadership, resolution of complex problems, development of self and others, and a record of community service.
Jana Frieler, president of CASSP, said, “Brent has dedicated his career to building relationships. His genuine concern for the well being of each student has been the driving force for his career in administration. Frieler said that CASE will present Curtice with his award at a school district event this spring. He and other CASE award winners also will be recognized at the annual CASE convention this summer in Breckenridge.
As Colorado High School Principal of the Year, Brent Curtice is eligible for National High School Principal of the Year recognition, which will be announced in early 2005. He will be honored, along with other state winners, in Washington, D.C. at that time.~
Established in 1969, the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) is an organization of more than 2,000 school administrators committed to improving student achievement through promoting and building quality education leadership in all Colorado schools.
